Brands Hatch - Rounds 7 & 8
Qualifying at Brands Hatch was held in a scorching temperature of 32 degrees. Getting a quick time on the first three laps was essential, the tyres after this would quickly loos grip and times get slower. Jonny managed to get his best lap of 48.805 on lap three, although with a clean lap there was surely more to come as he managed an almost identical time three laps later. A disappointed Jonny qualified only eleventh. Christian did his best time on lap nine, long after the best of the tyre performance had gone, he too was not a happy man, knowing a lap like this on fresh tyres would have put him on pole, he was only seventeen hundreds of a second from the pole time. Christian qualified seventh. It was going to be difficult for both drivers to get a good result from their starting positions.
Our first race of the weekend saw all the cars except one on wet tyres. A quick thunder storm soaked the track, as the cars sat in the assembly area we new the track would be dry by the end of the twenty five minute race, the team changed the cars from new wets to some older work hardened sets, this turned out to be a good decision. All the cars left the start except Christian, his engine had stalled! He was now right at the back of the field, picking cars off one by one. The track by now was completely dry, every one struggling for grip on wet tyres Christian battled his way up to third place only three seconds behind the leader and a couple of tenths behind second place. If only the engine had not died on the start, that cost much more than the missing three seconds for the win.
Jonny had a much less exiting time, fighting for grip he battled his way up to eighth place by the end of the race. Although disappointed he drove a fine race, the lesson learned, you must do well in qualifying to get the best result.
Our second race of the weekend was going to be run in much hotter conditions, more like qualifying, tyres will play a big part once more. The drivers who look after their tyres best will have the best car in the latter stages of the race.
The lights went out for the start of the race and all the cars left the line this time. The cars split into a lead bunch and then a huge train of cars behind Adriano Busaid, the Brazilian not going very quickly but doing a good job of keeping every one behind. Jonny being one of the unlucky drivers in this bunch. Half distance and Jonny had forced his way up the pack only to spin at Paddock hill bend. With tyres now having lost most of their grip plus oil on the track it was all Jonny could do to get up to twelfth place by the flag.
Christian had a hard but mostly uneventful race starting in seventh place battling up to forth behind James Nash, who made his car very wide, Christian trying all ways to get by and with about three laps to go Christian made a lunge up the inside at Clearways, only to spin and put himself down the order to finish a disappointing sixth.
Our next race is at Rockingham on August 12th and 13th. Both drivers have been very quick there in testing so hopefully we will have a podium finish in both races.
